HUMANS OF KIPP HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL
daniela pineda
Daniela Pineda is a sophomore student at the KIPP: Houston High School. The question I asked her during the interview was regarding the necklace that she has worn and what she values most in her life. "The necklace was passed on to me by my aunt, on my father's side, as a family heirloom. It's an angel's wing and the symbolism behind it is that my guardian angel is always watching over me. The necklace was first given to my aunt from my grandma but when my grandma died, I was devastated that I couldn't be with her in the last moments. My aunt told me that by giving me the necklace, my grandma was always with me since the necklace had originally belonged to her. This necklace is my most prized possession and, one day, I hope to pass it on to my daughter. I value the relationships that I have had in my life and the memories that have come along with them. I know my grandma will always be with me and in my heart."
ms.morency
Ms. Morency is the English Composition Teacher for 10th grade at KIPP: Houston High School. and this is what she has to say on her reflection of her life: "I moved to Houston, Texas from Boston, MA a year and a half ago. This move was a testament of my faith and I'm so glad I made this jump. Since this move, I've been more confident in who I am; I create boundaries in my relationships, comfortably speak up for myself, and say no without apologizing. I think life should be lived on your own terms rather than the expectations others have upon you. Think to yourself what makes you happy, what passions can you cultivate into creating a career you love, and that is the life I strive to live every day."
10th grade student
This 10th grade student wished to be anonymous but she values family a lot and this is what she has to say about why: "My family's origin is Nigerian. My parents value family and have instilled in my siblings and me their values and traditions. I have always been on top of my grades in order to set the example for my siblings but to always make my parents proud of their daughter. In my culture, academics are very important so I try to be the best in my class so I never have to be a disappointment to my family. They are my motivation to do well and are always with me. I hope to one day make a family as united as the one my parents have created for me throughout my life."
